Iris F. Smith

SMITHSBURG - Iris F. Smith, 84, of 22613 Stevenson Road, Smithsburg, died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, at Julia Manor Health Care Center in Hagerstown.

Born Dec. 20, 1916, in Foxville, Md., she was the daughter of the late J. Earl and Velma Lillian Buhrman Pryor.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester L. Smith, in 1991.

She is survived by two daughters, Gloria J. Bowman of Smithsburg and Faye C. Myers of Houston, Texas; a son John D. Smith of Smithsburg; five grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Thais M. Hallenborg, and a brother, Mearl R. Pryor.

Private graveside services will be held at the Smithsburg Cemetery. The Rev. William C. Kercheval will officiate.

The family will receive friends Monday, Jan. 8, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Davis Funeral Home, 12525 Bradbury Avenue, Smithsburg.




Ruth E. Shaw

FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - Ruth Elizabeth Shaw, 80, of Caledonia Manor Nursing Home and formerly of Neelyton, Pa., died Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, at Caledonia Manor.

Born Sept. 1, 1920, in Neelyton, she was the daughter of the late Jesse R. and Idona Piper Flood.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman H. Shaw, in 1970. They were married Feb. 15, 1938.

She was a homemaker.

She was a Protestant.

She is survived by three daughters, Evelyn Mellott of McConnellsburg, Pa., Barbara Souders of Big Cove Tannery, Pa., and Robin Miller of Hustontown, Pa.; a son, Ralph Shaw of Morrisville, Pa.; a brother, Richard Flood Sr. of Mifflintown, Pa.; eight grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Robert Shaw; a sister, Margaret Tice; a brother, Robert Flood; and a grandson.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at M.R. Brown Funeral Home in Hustontown, Pa. The Rev. Kenneth Cornelius will officiate. Burial will be in Hustontown Cemetery.

Visitation will be Monday from 9 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.




Harry C. Hoskin III

MARION, Pa. - Harry C. Hoskin III, 57, of 5525 Main St., Apt. A, died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, at his home.

He was born Jan. 1, 1944, in North Carolina.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Donna O. Sessions Hoskin, in 1998.

He retired from the U.S. Army after 24 years of service. Later, he worked as a truck driver for the former DK Hershey in Hanover, Pa.

He was a veteran of the Vietnam War.

He was a member of Marion Volunteer Fire Co.

He is survived by two sons, Harry C. Hoskin IV of Marion and Richard C. Hoskin of Greencastle, Pa., and three grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Monday at 7 p.m. at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road in Chambersburg. The Rev. Mark A. Hagy will officiate. A brief military honor service will be conducted by members of Veterans of the Vietnam War Post 41 of Chambersburg, immediately following the memorial service.

Burial will be private.

The family will receive friends Monday at 6 p.m. at the funeral home.




Richard S. Scalia

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Richard Samuel Scalia, 66, of 206 Tanglewood Lane, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, at Chambersburg Hospital.

Born July 27, 1934, in Huntingdon, Pa., he was the son of the late Basil and Catherine Blett Scalia.

He retired from South Mountain Restoration Center in South Mountain, Pa., after 10 years of service. Earlier, he worked for a number of years at TM Zimmerman Moving and Storage in Chambersburg.

He served in the U.S. Army.

He was a member of American Legion of Harrisburg, Pa.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy P. Zimmerman Scalia, whom he married Dec. 18, 1965; a daughter Catherine Roberts of Chambersburg; a son, Richard T. Scalia of Chambersburg; a stepdaughter, Regina Avard of Arcadia, Fla.; two stepsons, Mark W. Avard and Eric W. Avard, both of Fayetteville, Pa.; three sisters, Catherine Ruby and Patty Scalia, both of Chambersburg, and Dorothy Lutz of Fayetteville; two brothers, Robert Scalia of Chambersburg and Joe Scalia of Tyrone, Pa.; 11 grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by a sister and three brothers.

A memorial service will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road in Chambersburg.

Burial will be private.

The family will receive friends Thursday at noon at the funeral home.

Frances C. Hammond

Frances Catherine Hammond, 72, of 505 1/2 Summit Ave., Hagerstown, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, at her home.

Born Aug. 2, 1928, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of Edna C. Harbaugh Grove of Hagerstown and the late Lester W. Grove.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carroll J. Hammond, in 1994.

She was employed as manager of Eddie's Cleaners in Frederick, Md.

She was a member of Christ's Reformed Church in Hagerstown.

She was a member of Amvets Post 10 and American Legion Funkstown Post 211.
