Gateway planning to open store here

HALFWAY - Gateway computer company plans to open a store at Crosspoint shopping center near Valley Mall this summer.

The 5,000-square-foot store will be the young shopping center's third tenant, said Chris Bell, president of Greencastle Development in Annapolis, Md.

Target opened its 104,000-square-foot store at Crosspoint in March 1999, Bell said. The other tenant is Michaels craft store with 24,000 square feet.

The company is working with other potential tenants to fill what may eventually add up to 400,000 square feet of retail, office and hotel space, Bell said.

The building that will house Gateway is under construction at the corner of Massey Boulevard and Cole Road, he said.

Gateway Country Stores will be one of 300 nationwide, said company spokeswoman Cory Baker.

The store will include a training center that will offer free clinics for basic computer training and up to 30 classes on specific computer tasks such as digital photography and personal finance.

The store also features demonstrations of computers as well as new Internet appliances that allow consumers to retrieve e-mail or listen to computer music files without sitting in front of a computer.

"It's a wonderful opportunity to touch and feel and try everything out," she said.

Gateway also operates its "store within a store" at various Office Max locations, she said.

Crosspoint shopping center was developed by Hekbel Limited Liability Corp., a joint venture of Greencastle Development and the Hekemian family of Hackensack, N.J., Bell said.
