Mail Call for 1/4

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call during the week. The Mail Call number is 301-791-6236.

You are welcome to leave a recorded message on any subject, but some calls will be screened out.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"From Hagerstown, most of the readers could care less who George Bush puts in the Cabinet. It might as well be Mickey Mouse and when it is all said and done, it will probably be about the same thing."

"I saw in the paper where a paintball store opened in Williamsport. I had my house paintballed and it took a good bit of washing to get it off. I also had my grandson hit with a paintball and he had a welt on him for quite a while. I wonder what would happen if someone got shot in the eye with one? I don't think those paint- balls are such a good idea."

"I saw in Mail Call where it said that we would like to have an IHOP in Boonsboro. Yes, we would. There are plenty of places where you could put one and you wouldn't even have to build a building. There are plenty of empty buildings. This is what the young and old people need."

"I would like to know when will there be a Ryan's Restaurant coming into town. There are a lot of restaurants here now, but when will Ryan's be here?"

"This goes out to my sunshine from your teddy bear. I know we weren't able to spend the holidays together including your birthday. I miss you and I can't wait to see you again. I love you from your teddy bear."

"I want to thank the person that found my red and black plaid scarf in the back of the Valley Mall and tied it to the car. Happy New Year."

"To the person who called in from Boonsboro. I would like to have an IHOP in Hagerstown that is smoke free."

"I would like to know if I was the only one in Washington County that was upset when they received their new Washington County Property Tax Assessment? My property taxes have doubled in the past 10 years, which does not include the next three years' assessment. Is the state of Maryland trying to run everyone out of Washington County? Give us a break, especially since our personal income has not gone up anywhere near the property rate increases."

"I am calling in response to the lady who wrote a letter to the editor about the Summit Point Race Track. I am not a race fan, I have never been to a race in my 45 years of my life, nor is my husband a race fan. I do feel that the race track was here long before she moved from Fairfax County. I am sure that they would have more jobs for people if their track was enlarged. Move somewhere else."

"I think Funkstown is a dear little village. I think it would be wonderful if everyone on the front street or the whole town would put a light in their window at Christmas time. The first two blocks do a wonderful job, but then the last two blocks, there aren't any. Wouldn't it just be great, I think it would make a great attraction."

"I am calling to congratulate two wonderful people in my life. My son, James, we call him J.W. and his fiance`, Jessica, on the birth of their first child, a son, Logan on Dec. 29. You are in my heart and I know you will be the best parents in the world. We are so happy for you. Love mom and dad, Mariah and Russell."

"We need some calendars. The Western Maryland Hospital on Pennsylvania Avenue, the patients love calendars in their rooms. We are short of them. Anyone with any 2001 calendars of any kind, I would be glad to pick them up and deliver them to Western Maryland Hospital. My number is 301-791-7417. Calendars of any kind, please."

"I would like to know why throwing cigarette butts out of a car window is not considered littering?"
