Two hurt, horse killed in accident

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Two people were injured when their vehicle slammed into a horse in the middle of a road in Montgomery Township Tuesday, Pennsylvania State Police said.

Clifford and Bertha Smith, of 11670 Mercersburg Road, were headed south on Pa. 416 Tuesday evening when their car crested a small hill and struck a horse standing in the travel lane, police said.

That accident happened at 6:42 p.m. just north of Fritz Road.

Clifford Smith had minor injuries and Bertha Smith was treated at Chambersburg Hospital. Neither was wearing a seat belt, police said.

The horse, owned by Amy Lundgrew, of 10494 Mercersburg Road, was killed.

Two charged in Sunday night fight

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Two Waynesboro men were charged after they became involved in a drunken fight Sunday night, Pennsylvania State Police said.


Paul Joseph Noll Jr., 19, of Waynesboro, was charged with simple assault, disorderly conduct, underage drinking, criminal mischief, harassment and public drunkenness, police said.

Michael L. Spanger, 34, of Waynesboro, was charged with disorderly conduct, police said.

The men engaged in a fight while intoxicated at 657 Heintzelman Ave. in Hamilton Township around 10:30 p.m. Sunday, police said.

Noll was placed in Franklin County Prison and has since been released.

Police investigate Lowe's bomb threat

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - A Chambersburg business was shut down for several hours Tuesday afternoon while Pennsylvania State Police investigated a bomb threat.

A caller to the Franklin County Emergency Center told the operator a bomb would detonate at Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse, 1600 Lincoln Way East in Chambersburg, Pa., police said.

State Police responded to the scene after the 2:47 p.m. and evacuated the building.

Explosive detection dogs did not detect explosives, police said.
