WILLIAMSPORT - Junior forward Eariel Gholson scored seven of her game-high 19 points in the fourth quarter as Smithsburg held off a late Williamsport to beat the Wildcats 49-46 in a Monocacy Valley Athletic League game on Tuesday.

"We stuck together at the end and that helped us to pull out the win," Gholson said. "We just ran the plays like the coach told us."

Gholson helped stake the Leopards to a 46-39 advantage midway through the fourth.

But the Wildcats answered back with six straight points to narrow the gap to 46-45 with 1:21 remaining in the game.

Gholson got a clutch basket to put Smithsburg up by three with 1:06 to go. After Williamsport cut the lead down to two points, Katy Powell sank the first of two free throws to give the Leopards a 49-46 lead with 16 seconds left.

Williamsport had a chance to tie it at the end, but Brooke Weimer's 3-pointer bounced off of the rim with two seconds left to give Smithsburg the win.

"I thought that we played with real poise during the last two minutes," Smithsburg coach Jimmy Powell said.

Michelle Feiser collected 10 points, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals for Smithsburg (5-2, 4-1). Powell added 13 points and four steals, Gholson grabbed 10 rebounds and Melanie Whitt had eight rebounds.

Weimer led Williamsport (7-2, 4-2) with 15 points.

"Smithsburg was more aggressive than we were and they also rebounded better than we did," Williamsport coach Curtis Graff said.
