Smithsburg Briefs

SMITHSBURG - The Town Council voted unanimously Tuesday to spend almost $1,600 for a street light at Orndorff Drive and East Water Street.

Mayor Tommy Bowers said the town will pay Jernigan's Landscaping Inc. of Smithsburg $500 to dig a ditch and put in a conduit.

The remaining $1,050 will go to Allegheny Power for the pole and the high-pressure sodium light.

"We need that intersection properly lit," Bowers said. "It's dark, very dark, going back there."

The work will be done "as soon as the weather clears," he said.

The council agreed to transfer money from the police officers' salary line to pay for the work. Bowers said that fund was used because the town has put off hiring a third police officer.

SMITHSBURG - The town's police department responded to 73 calls in December, according to a report submitted to the Mayor and Town Council.

The department issued 14 summonses and five written warnings, the report said.

The report also mentioned year-end crime totals for the town. They included two assaults with firearms, one assault with another dangerous weapon, one motor vehicle theft, three aggravated assaults and 16 simple assaults.
