Hearing scheduled for proposed school budget



A public hearing on the Washington County Board of Education's proposed fiscal year 2002 budget is set for Thursday at 7 p.m. at the board's central office on Commonwealth Avenue.

Schools Superintendent Herman G. Bartlett is proposing an approximately $128 million budget for next school year, an increase of about $9.6 million over the current budget.

The budget requests include:

HEIGHT="6" ALT="* "> $5.3 million in salary increases for all staff.

HEIGHT="6" ALT="* "> $2.3 million for anticipated health insurance increases.

HEIGHT="6" ALT="* "> $896,000 for 16 replacement buses.

HEIGHT="6" ALT="* "> $350,000 for anticipated energy costs increases.

HEIGHT="6" ALT="* "> $216,000 to replace four contract school buses.

Anyone interested in speaking at the hearing should sign up in advance by calling the superintendent's secretary at 301-766-2817, or by signing up at the time of the hearing.

School board President J. Herbert Hardin said those who sign up in advance have a better chance of being placed on the list of speakers. Any organization wishing to make public comments should designate one person as the speaker, Hardin said.
