Robber demands money at Pa. motel

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - A robber confronted the desk clerk at the McConnellsburg Days Inn Motel early Friday morning and demanded money, Pennsylvania State Police reported.

After getting an undisclosed amount of money, the man fled the motel, which is off Exit 31 of Interstate 70, police said.

No weapon was displayed. The clerk was unhurt.

Frederick shooting hospitalizes man

A man was in serious condition at Washington County Hospital Friday night with a gunshot wound to the chest and his accused assailant was in the Frederick County Detention Center charged with a shooting that occurred at 11 p.m. Thursday.

Jacob Luther Smith, 52, of Dickerson, Md., was flown to the hospital shortly after the incident on James Street, the Frederick County Sheriff's Department reported. He was listed in serious condition Friday evening.


Daniel Erik Staley, 34, of the 8500 block of Willowbrook Road, Frederick, was charged with attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault and use of a handgun in a violent crime.

He was also cited for violation of a protective order issued to keep Staley out of the James Street home where the shooting took place, deputies said.

3 arrested on drug charges in Frederick

FREDERICK, Md. - Three drug arrests were made Thursday night during an undercover operation at the John Hansen apartment complex in Frederick.

Sherif Deen Akande, 22, of New Hampshire Avenue, Hyattsville, Md., was charged with distribution of crack cocaine, possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine and possession of cocaine.

Nathan Gian Ortaldo, 25, of Glen Rock Drive, Frederick, was charged with possession of marijuana and cocaine.

Wesley Nathan Haynes, 24, of Adventure Avenue, Walkersville, Md., was charged with possession of marijuana.

Car windshield smashed at Pa. mall

GREENE TOWNSHIP, Pa. - Two windows and the windshield on a 1988 Pontiac Grand Prix were smashed at the Chambersburg Mall overnight on Wednesday, causing $650 worth of damage, Pennsylvania State Police said.

Two doors and the hood of the car, which belongs to a Chambersburg woman, were dented, police said.

Car leaves accident after striking fence

GUILFORD TOWNSHIP, Pa. - A blue car veered off Wilkson Lane and struck a wooden fence on Dec. 21, then drove away, Pennsylvania State Police said Friday.

The hit-and-run accident occurred between 10:30 and 11:30 a.m. east of Valley Drive. Anyone with information about the incident can call police at 1-717-264-5161.
