Local roundup - Gibson's shot gives Gaels title



YORK, Pa. - St. Maria Goretti, which had lost two games at the buzzer this year, won the York Tournament title with 1.2 seconds left when Rodney Gibson made a 15-footer to beat host York Catholic 58-56 on Thursday.

The Gaels (8-1, No. 5 in the Herald-Mail poll) fell behind by as many as four points in the fourth quarter but rallied to tie the game at 56-56. Gibson kept it tied with a blocked shot and a steal.

Then, with 15 seconds left, the Gaels ran the clock down for Gibson, who finished with 18 points, and was named the tournament MVP. Gibson also had seven rebounds, five blocked shots, five assists and five steals.

Matt Tanner added 14 points and was named to the all-tournament team and teammate Matt Spierenburg also scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

EMMITTSBURG, Md. - Justin Malott led a fourth-quarter surge by Boonsboro, making seven of nine free throws down the stretch, to help the Warriors defeat Smithsburg at Mount St. Mary's' Knott Arena.

Boonsboro led for most of the first half, closing with a three-point lead at intermission, but the Leopards held them to just nine points in the third quarter to take a 37-35 advantage.

Boonsboro opened the fourth period with a full-court press that led to easy Warrior baskets off of steals, giving them back the lead and forcing the Leopards to resort to fouling to get the ball back.

Malott had a game-high 19 points to lead the Warriors (3-3) as they made 13 of 15 foul shots in the final frame. Kevin Bigelow added 12 points for the Boonsboro effort.

Danny Young led Smithsburg (3-3) with 16 points while Apollo Bey had 14 and Corey Brown scored 12.

Boonsboro will play for the championship tonight at 8 against Catoctin.
