Police capture Md. fugitive



CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - A Chambersburg man was awaiting extradition to Maryland after Chambersburg Police picked him up near a local supermarket Tuesday afternoon, police said.

Jeffrey Allen Stevens, 27, of 6164 Hades Church Road, Chambersburg, Pa., was charged with being a fugitive from justice. He was in Franklin County Prison Thursday in lieu of $50,000, according to Chambersburg Police.

Police were initially called to Giant Food Store at 993 Wayne Ave. around 4:40 p.m. Tuesday to investigate a report of retail theft, police said.

While looking for the suspect in the theft, police encountered a man they believed to be a fugitive from justice.

After checking his identification, police determined he was wanted in Maryland.

Stevens was taken before District Justice Gary Carter and placed in Franklin County Prison.

Stevens was wanted on an outstanding bench warrant in Howard County, Md., for failing to appear in Maryland Circuit Court on a charge of possession with intent to distribute an controlled substance, police said.
