Hubs use big burst to cruise

WILLIAMSPORT - The 20th Annual Richard E. Doub Classic got started on Tuesday night at Williamsport with a couple of runaway victories.

In the opener, North Hagerstown ran away with an 84-60 victory over Atholton. During the second game, Brunswick built a huge 23-3 lead at the end of the first quarter and finished with a 58-33 victory over Williamsport.

"I just calmed down and hit the basic shots," Rice said. "It felt good to score all of those points. But I have to give credit to the whole team. The whole team was involved in the win. I thank the people that gave me the ball. I think that if we continue to play as a team, then we have the potential to win the MVAL."

Evan Medley had 20 points, Tavis Green added 14 points and seven rebounds and Mike Rodgers had 10 assists for the Hubs.

Forward Calvin Williams led the Raiders with 22 points.

Rice scored 12 of his 27 points during the first quarter to help the Hubs take a 24-13 advantage.

"I think that we got a lot of offense off of our defense," North Hagerstown coach Tim McNamee said. "We were able to set the tempo of the game right from the very beginning. It was an up-tempo game and that is our style. Normally, it is in our favor."

Reserve center Alonzo Weeks led Williamsport with 11 points. The Wildcats saw a lesson in futility end in the fourth quarter by scoring 22 points in the period. They had just 11 in the game before that.
