South decks Boonsboro

South Hagerstown's Chad Sweigert, who wrestles at 119 pounds, thanks teammate Stephen Copeland for his win in South Hagerstown's 60-9 victory over Boonsboro on Friday.

According to Sweigert, who pinned Marty Kaetzel in 4:36, Copeland's 10-2 major decision over Jake Stottlemyer in the 112-pound weight class fired him up.

"I just got fired up because of the match before," Sweigert said. "I didn't know anything (about Kaetzel), I didn't know what his record was or anything."

Sweigert and Kaetzel switched leads several times during the first and second periods. Sweigert scored two points in the beginning of the third period to take an 11-8 lead over Kaetzel and then pinned him 20 seconds later. The Rebels were trailing 6-4 going into the match. With Sweigert's pin they were able to take a 10-6 lead and dominate for the rest of the meet.

"The key to our matches is our conditioning," South coach Brian Brake said. "Some of these kids do have more experience and we're able to work more on long distance running and calisthenics as compared to just going in and teaching what a half is, teaching what a cradle is. (Sweigert's) been around a couple years wrestling in our junior leagues and it does pay off."

Copeland had a 8-2 lead over Stottlemyer with seconds left in the match. He then scored a takedown to take a 10-2 lead and the major decision. Stottlemyer had defeated Copeland two weeks ago at the St. James tournament.

"I think with Stottlemyer losing at 112 ... that hurt us and it just got (South) fired up and they carried throughout the entire match," Boonsboro coach Steve Peperak said. "They beat kids that they shouldn't have ... We got off to a bad start and the kids were flat."

The Rebels (2-2) received pins from Brandon Ashby (125), Terry Jones (130), Tony Bowers (135), Tony Blakney (140), Sal Mauriello (189) and Walter Drill (275).

"My guy was an OK wrestler, but he didn't have much experience," Ashby (6-0) said. "So as soon as I took him down I just rode legs a lot, turned him to his back a couple times and then eventually I pinned him."

The Warriors received a pin from Andrew Bryson (103).

The Rebels wrestled North Carroll before Boonsboro in a match that was rescheduled from Tuesday. The Rebels lost to North Carroll, 63-10.

"After the North Carroll match, we just got pumped up and said we can't lose two matches in a single day," Ashby said. "So we all said we were going to win no matter what."
