A basketball team can tell its in trouble when its turnovers outnumber its points. Just ask the St. Maria Goretti girls.

"They took it to us from the opening tip," said coach Todd Rideout after his Gaels were demolished 75-35 by No. 4 Martinsburg in an Apple Valley League game Friday night.

The Bulldogs' man-to-man pressure defense wreaked havoc on the overmatched Gaels, forcing 38 turnovers, many of which were converted to easy buckets. When Goretti managed to get into its half-court set, it was unable to get the ball inside to its leading scorer, center Lauren Costello.

"Our defense got into their passing lanes and played with some intensity," said Martinsburg coach Don Bullett. "That gave us some easy baskets in transition. Our guards did a really nice job putting pressure on the basketball."

Costello, third in the area with a 16.2 points per game average, failed to score until the 5:59 mark of the third period, and finished with just five points before fouling out midway through the fourth quarter,

The Bulldogs (2-3, 1-0) were able to score from the inside and the perimeter, as Maggie Robinson, Erika Pittsnogle and Danielle Murray combined for 32 points primarily from the paint, many of them after their 16 offensive rebounds. Meanwhile, Lasha Anderson provided the outside threat, pouring in 21 points, including three 3-pointers.

Junior Brett Stone took up some of the slack from Costello's sub-par offensive output, scoring a season-high 18 points for the Gaels (3-4, 0-2). But Costello was plenty active at the defensive end, blocking seven shots and pulling down 10 rebounds.

Despite getting off to a slow start and having its point guard, Tasha Robinson, saddled with three fouls in the first seven minutes, Martinsburg poured it on in the second period, outscoing the Gaels 14-2 to open the quarter. The Bulldogs made it 34-13 with a 9-1 run late in the first half.
