JB, Greencastle split

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - The fans who braved the ice and cold for Thursday's Mid Penn Colonial doubleheader between the James Buchanan and Greencastle-Antrim basketball teams got to witness to a little bit of everything.

The Rockets girls used a 19-0 run in the third qurater to open the festivities with a 59-37 victory over the Blue Devils. Then Greencastle assured itself a split - barely - with a last-second layup for a 56-54 nailbiter over JB in the boys game.

Greencastle (2-6, 1-4) had a 51-40 lead with just under seven minutes to play, but went on a six-minute scoring drought. When John Sheppard made two 3-pointers - the first from the right wing off the glass with 2:05 left, the second from the right corner 35 seconds later - JB (3-5, 2-2) had cut the Blue Devils' lead down to one, 51-50.

"I thought we were in control the whole game," Greencastle coach Garon Gembe said. "Then in the fourth quarter, they bank in a 3 ... we were 2 of 8 from the foul line ... you start doubting yourself."

Down by two, JB center Andy Ryder came up with two offensive rebounds, the second which he scored with 14 seconds left to tie the game.

The Blue Devils had one last chance off an inbounds play with 6 seconds left, and Jeremy Barnes raced up the court before finding Dan Chlebowski on the baseline for the winning layup as the clock ran out, sending the home crowd into an uproar.

"You look for kids who can make plays in the fourth quarter," Gembe said. "Barnes made a play."

"You've got to play 32 minutes in a game," JB coach Larry Strawoet said. "You can't just come out and play in the fourth quarter."

HEIGHT="6" ALT="* "> James Buchanan's girls (4-2, 3-1) turned back Greencastle (4-4, 3-2) with a memorable third quarter, as the Rockets lived up to their nickname with fast break after fast break while outrebounding the Blue Devils 14-2 during a 19-0 run that gave JB a 49-25 lead.

"We are a team of streaks, and we've got eight, nine or 10 girls that can get us started," Rockets coach John Lum said. "We've got to push it up the floor, we don't have the size to do anything else."

James Buchanan placed three players - Lori Stauder, Leah Price and Ellen Poe - in double figures and helped its cause at the foul line, making 11 of 13 attempts.
