Hagerstown post office to stay open late Saturday

Tri-State area procrastinators can rely on the Hagerstown Post Office to bail them out of a holiday jam this weekend.

The Franklin Street office will stay open to 5 p.m. Saturday, even though other post offices in the Tri-State area will close by noon.

Business at local post offices has been brisk.

"I think the holiday is sneaking up on people a little bit this year," said David Lewin, spokesman for the U.S. Postal Service.

Believe it or not, cards and gift packages mailed as late as Saturday will still arrive by Christmas Day, Monday, for people who are willing to pay the extra cost of overnight Express Mail.

The guarantee of Express Mail doesn't come cheap. It costs $11.75 for a card or package under one pound. The rates are the same during the holidays as they are year-round, Lewin said.

For those who find themselves in a bind on Sunday, when all Tri-State area post offices are closed, there's a last resort, Lewin said.

People can drive to the Air Mail Center located near BWI airport at the Air Cargo Complex, Building C, Door 19. The center is open every day of the year, including Christmas Day.

"If you're going to wait until the last possible minute you have to be willing to go the extra mile," he said.
