South revs Green Machine to run over Catoctin

The "Green Machine" showed that it comes in a sporty model too.

The one that is able to put the petal to the metal and excelarate.

South Hagerstown popped into overdrive on Monday, pushing from start to finish as the Rebels squashed the Catoctin Cougars 96-46 in a Monocacy Valley Athletic League boys basketball game.

"The Green Machine rolls," South Hagerstown coach Bob Starkey said. "Our overall speed and quickness was the determining factor. Something to admire about our team is that they constantly play hard, no matter what the score is. All 11 players that saw action scored. Six of those players were in double figures."

The Rebels (4-0 overall, 3-0 MVAL) scored at least 20 points in each quarter.

"South has got some incredible athletes," Catoctin coach Chris Barnhart said. "They didn't even press us and they scored 96 points."

Rebels' point guard Domonique Richmond played for three quarters and so did the other starters for South Hagerstown. But Richmond was able to score 21 points, including 18 in the first half to help the Rebels build a 41-14 halftime lead.

"Domonique Richmond turned the game early with his defense," Starkey added. "He was able to convert some steals into some easy buckets. Richmond triggered us and got us going."

Richmond, a 6-foot-2, 183-pound junior, made 9 of his 12 shots. He added four steals and four assists.

"We like to jump on teams early," Richmond said. "We feel like that the game is decided in the opening few minutes. So, we try to go off transition early. We play so intense on defense that we turn it right into offense. We all feel that we can score that many points."

Mike Lee, who is a 6-foot-5 senior center, ended up with 14 rebounds, 12 points and five blocked shots for South. Shannon Suttle, Nick Maas and Scott Barrish scored 11 points apiece for the Rebels. Mike Jeter added 10 points for South. Barrish grabbed seven rebounds, while Danny Fowler added four steals and four assists for the Rebels.

Brian Boyer had 10 points and five steals, while Ryan Tokar added six rebounds for Catoctin (0-5 overall, 0-4 MVAL).
