Verna M. Kantner

QUINCY, Pa. - Verna M. Staley Kantner, 87, a resident of Quincy United Methodist Home, and formerly of 20 E. North St., Waynesboro, Pa., died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, in the nursing home.

Born March 10, 1913, in Guilford Township, on Fayetteville Road, she was the daughter of the late Harry W. and Lula Naugle Staley. She lived her early life in Guilford Township.

Her husband, Charles S. Kantner died in 1951. They were married in 1943.

She was employed by the State Department of Health and then the Department of Health and Welfare in Hamburg, Pa. Prior to retiring in 1974, she was employed at South Mountain Restoration Center for 40 years.


She is survived by two brothers, Harold W. Staley of Ferrum, Va., and Charles E. Staley of St. Thomas, Pa.; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers.

Services will be held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. The Rev. Lynn D. Trutt will be officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Mont Alto, Pa.

It was her request to have no public viewing.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Meals on Wheels Program, 912 South Potomac Street, Waynesboro, PA 17268.

Jessie R. Hixon

WARFORDSBURG, Pa. - Jessie Ruth Hixon, 85, of McKees Gap Road, died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, at Morgan County War Memorial Hospital in Berkeley Springs, W.Va.

Born Sept. 26, 1915, in Buck Valley, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Frank and Gertrude Bottenfield Barney.

She attended Harmonia School.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Buck Valley Christian Church.

She is survived by her husband, Clifford M. Hixon of Warfordsburg; two daughters, Jean Mitchell of Warfordsburg and Judy Slaughter of Williamsport, Pa.; two sons, Larry Hixon of Pittstown, N.J., and Darl Lee Hixon of Beltsville, Md.; one sister, Emma Hixon of Warfordsburg; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be held Thursday, Dec. 21, at 2 p.m., at Buck Valley Christian Church, Harmonia Road, Warfordsburg. The Rev. William Swope and the Rev. Clint Bahrenburg will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St., Hancock., and Thursday at the church one hour prior to services. For the convenience of friends, the funeral home will be open Wednesday from 2 to 9 p.m.

Mary C. Constantine

WILLIAMSPORT - Mary C. Constantine, 96, of 10615 Peachtree Lane , died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, at Williamsport Nursing Home.

Born Dec. 31, 1903, in Emmitsburg, Md., she was the daughter of the late Charles Oscar and Mary Claudia Peters Rosensteel.

Her husband, George C. Constantine, died in 1984.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of St. Augustine's Roman Catholic Church in Williamsport.

She was a member of Welcome Wagon Club of Arlington, Va., and Falls Church Music Club in Falls Church, Va.

She is survived by one daughter, Marie Elaine Constantine of Williamsport; two sons, G. Leon Constantine of Olney, Md., and J. Victor Constantine of Alexandria, Va.; and one sister, Margaret R. Polley of Fairfield, Pa.; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Agnes R. Houch and Bertha R. Sprankle; and four brothers, William Rosensteel, Louis Rosensteel, Richard H. Rosensteel and Ernest Rosensteel.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 20, at St. Augustine's Roman Catholic Church, 32 E. Church St., Williamsport. The Rev. Alfred E. Smith will be celebrant. Burial will be Wednesday at 1 p.m., in Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Rockville, Md.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport. For the convenience of friends the funeral home will be open after noon today. Prayers will be offered at 6:30 p.m.

The family requests the omission of flowers. Memorial donations may be made to St. Augustine's Roman Catholic Church, 32 E. Potomac St., Williamsport, MD 21795.

Tara R. Smetzer

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Tara R. Sease Smetzer, 28, of 10655 Bailey Spring Road, died early Sunday morning as the result of a single car accident on Mentzer Gap Road.

Born July 18, 1972, in Waynesboro, she was the daughter of Bonnie L. Smith Sease of South Mountain, Pa., and Rodney L. Brown of Thurmont, Md.

She attended Waynesboro Area Senior High School.

She was employed as a private duty nurse for various organizations and recently worked in the accounting department of Rent-Way in Waynesboro.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Barry L. Smetzer, whom she married Nov. 25, 1995; two daughters, Jessica R. Gleckler and Kisha M. Strang, both at home; two sisters, Stacie A. Naugle and Lynaya M. Hewitt, both of South Mountain; a brother, Jamie L. Sease of South Mountain; a stepbrother, Jason Brown; five nephews; a niece; aunts and uncles.
