Goretti trounces Lions

By JACK HILL III / Staff Correspondent

If any member of the St. Maria Goretti girls basketball team were old enough to play the lottery, Saturday would have been a good day for them to play 26.

The Gaels came through with 26 assists and 26 steals, while 6-foot-1 senior center Lauren Costello scored 26 points to lead Goretti to an easy 75-40 victory over Broadfording Christian at the Gael Center.

The Gaels (3-3) had a team total of 25 rebounds - one short of the Gaels' lucky number of the day. Costello grabbed 12 of those 25 rebounds. Costello also made 12 of her 17 shots from the field, blocked six shots and made four steals.

"I was so proud of my team," Costello said. "We worked the ball around to everyone."

Junior forward Brett Stone collected 16 points, eight assists and six steals for St. Maria Goretti. Kelly Wills dished off seven assists and Katie Chambers made six steals for the Gaels.

Vanessa Ruffin made nine of her 16 shots from the floor as she finished with 23 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots for the Lions (5-4).

St. Maria Goretti coach Todd Rideout was impressed with his team's performance.

"We did a good job today of taking care of the basketball," Rideout said. "We almost had a 2-1 ratio with 26 assists and only 14 turnovers. We put a lot of pressure on their guards. Our defense led us to many easy baskets. We also got some buckets off of the transition."

"We just ran into a good aggressive basketball team today," Broadfording coach Dana Gonzales said. "They are hungry and they were running all over the floor."

The Gaels scored 14 straight points during the first quarter to build a 14-4 lead. Stone scored eight points and Costello added six points during that stretch for the Gaels.
