Local roundup - Jefferson girls get past Mercersburg

By DAN KAUFFMAN / Staff Writer

SHENANDOAH JUNCTION, W,Va. - Jefferson girls basketball coach Cheryl Roberts admitted she didn't know a lot about Mercersburg Academy's team coming into Friday night's game.

She didn't have to worry. Her Cougars had enough firepower to turn the Blue Storm into a drizzle. Mercersburg managed only five points in the first half as Jefferson cruised to a 57-18 victory and a 4-0 start to the season.

"We're 4-0, and you have to be happy with that," Roberst said. "But I don't know if we've really been tested."

The Cougars passed Friday's test easily, putting away the game in the second quarter when they held the Blue Storm to one point and went into halftime up, 29-5.

The Cougars bench saw significant action in the second half, beforee the starters finished things up.

"It was hard on the starters, they didn't play very much," Roberts said. "But we need them to play together."

Sheron Yates led Jefferson with 15 points, most of them coming in the paint against oversized Mercersburg. Lindsay Edwards had 12 points and Alicia Fleming added 8. June Marquiss led the Blue Storm with five points.
