Smithsburg girls edge Boonsboro

SMITHSBURG - The Smithsburg girls basketball team spends most of their games compensating for their size, or lack thereof.

The Leopards found a way to beat a taller Boonsboro team 57-44 in a Monocacy Valley Athletic League game on Tuesday night.

"We know we're undersized, we know that's our Achilles' heel and we work really hard in practice," Smithsburg coach Jimmy Powell said.

A 15-4 run covering the end of the first half and the beginning of the second put the Leopards up 23-11 to give them a commanding first-half lead.

Trailing by seven points going into the third quarter, the Warriors pulled within one point off shots by Ashley Amezcua, Sarah Harris and Mandy Myers that made the score 32-31.

"I hate to let people bring the ball to us, I want to take it to the other team, but we had to do that," Powell said. "I just saw the game slipping away from us (at that point) and we had to get back to handling the ball well."

The Leopards pulled away off a jumper and two free throws by Katy Powell that put Smithsburg up, 36-31. Two foul shots by Melanie Whitt put Smithsburg up 38-33 going into the fourth quarter, and the Leopards led the rest of the way.

"Every game's a tough game, but I came into the game expecting to win," Whitt said. "They have two good players in Liz Smith and Morgan Main, they're a big rebounding team. We're not, we're small, we're fast, we run a lot, we're a very aggressive team and we play with all our heart."

Smith had 17 rebounds and 16 points to lead the Warriors (0-2, 0-2). Sarah Harris had 16 rebounds Boonsboro and Main had seven assists.

"Tonight we just wanted to come out and play four quarters of solid basketball," Boonsboro coach Bernie Semler said. "We had about 26 minutes worth and we had a four minute letdown where we couldn't buy a free throw or get a basket in and that's when they pulled away from us."

LaNitra Higgins had 13 points and five steals to lead the Leopards (1-1, 1-1). Katy Powell had 15 points and five rebounds.
