Police pinpoint date of death

CLEAR SPRING - Investigators seeking a suspect and motive in the death of William Leonard Messersmith last week believe he was killed Tuesday, Dec. 5.

"He was seen earlier that day and not again," said Sgt. Todd May, a member of the Maryland State Police special investigation support unit.

May said he would like to hear from anyone who passed by the home or neighbors who might remember seeing or hearing something that could be helpful to investigators.

Calls can be made to the Hagerstown state police barrack at 301-739-2101.

The 76-year-old man's body was found Thursday in a pool of blood inside his home at 12019 National Pike. Preliminary reports indicate Messersmith died of severe trauma.

Investigators were awaiting an autopsy report from the Maryland State Medical Examiner's office in Baltimore.

Hagerstown troopers went to the small green mobile home about two miles west of Clear Spring Thursday in response to a 7:07 p.m. call to 911 from a woman who found the body.
