Lee sparks Rebels

Senior center notches double-double

At 6-foot-5 and around 300 pounds, South Hagerstown senior Mike Lee is more than just a large presence in the middle of the Rebels' team. He's also the glue that helps South stick together.

In a game against Clear Spring dominated by missed opportunities and sloppy play, Lee stood as tall as an oak tree, scoring 22 points and grabbing 15 rebounds while altering countless Blazers shots on the defensive end as the No. 3 Rebels pulled away to a 69-31 victory.

"He is the heart and soul that keeps them in it," Clear Spring coach Daryl Hunsberger said. "Whenever they need a look or a basket, he's there."

Lee scored eight points in the second quarter and 10 in the third before taking a seat on the bench for the entire fourth quarter with South up, 47-19. Lee made 11 of 17 shots, six coming off offensive rebounds as he carried the Rebels on his broad back.

"It's hard for him to have a bad night offensively because he's shooting from so close in," South coach Bob Starkey said. "(Without him) somebody else would have had to step up."

While the Rebels (2-0) committed 12 of their 17 turnovers in the first half, they stiffened on defense, holding the Blazers to 14 first-half points while forcing 19 turnovers to build a 30-14 lead. South held Clear Spring to 21 percent shooting (9 of 43) for the game.

"Defensively, we were tremendous," Starkey said. "We just couldn't convert offensively, and that's what made it look sloppy."

"We missed some shots, but I have to say the opportunities were there and we weren't intimidated," Hunsberger said. "Their defense is smothering."

Domonique Richmond had 15 points, including three 3-pointers, while Shannon Suttle added 10 for South.

Josh Keyton led Clear Spring (0-2) with nine points, while Will Worthington pulled down 11 rebounds.
