Lady Hawks win again

By JACK HILL III / Staff Correspondent

Brooke Russ had a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Hagerstown Community College women's basketball team to a 73-61 win over Potomac State on Wednesday at the HCC athletic complex.

Russ also made five steals and had four blocked shots to help the Hawks to their third straight win.

"Brooke Russ had a tremendous effort tonight," HCC coach Marlys Palmer added. "She just plays the game so hard. She is one of the best rebounding fast forwards that I have ever had. She is usually going to score in double figures, no matter how many minutes that she plays."

After scoring a total of 52 points during the first four games, Russ is currently the Hawks' leading scorer with an average of 13 points per game. Russ is also averaging eight rebounds a game.

"We work hard and we work together," Russ said. "All of us were talking to each other very well out there on the floor. Everybody on the team is gradually showing some improvement. There are many players on the team that are capable of scoring a lot of points. If one person is off, then somebody else can fill in the slack."

Vennece Fowlkes grabbed 13 rebounds and Robin Curley had 12 points for HCC.

The Hawks were only leading 14-11 with 10:36 remaining in the first half when they started an 18-3 scoring spurt over the next six minutes to build a 32-14 advantage. During that time span, Emily Middlekauff scored all nine of her points, while Curley added six points.

"Our defensive effort is better," Palmer said. "I think they understand their assignments a little bit better. I think that people are understanding their roles a little bit better, too. They are getting a feel for each other on the floor."
