Hagerstown Community College tries to get back on the winning track this weekend when the Hawks host the Cline Invitational at the HCC athletic complex.

HCC (8-1), which will be trying to bounce back from a 36-point loss to No. 3-ranked Southern Idaho, will host three regional opponents in the two-day tournament.

Howard (Tex.) Community College will face Niagara (N.Y.) Community College tonight at 5 followed by HCC against Lackawanna (Pa.) Community College at 7.

HCC defeated Lackawanna last month in a season-opening tournament at Monroe, N.Y.

The consolation game will be played Saturday at 2 p.m. with the championship being contested at 4 p.m.

The Hawks have six players averaging in double figures in scoring this season. HCC fell from the National JuCo Top 20 with the loss to Southern Idaho and were replaced in the weekly ratings by Allegany at No. 20.

Shepherd rallies by WVW

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. - Cassie Murray scored game-high 18 points as the Rams turned a seven-point halftime deficit into a 64-58 victory over West Virginia Wesleyan in the WVIAC.

Gail Siemer added 11 points, eight rebounds and four steals for Shepherd (5-1, 2-0), and Makia Staves had 11 boards to boost the Rams' 46-31 rebounding edge.

Two Rams in Cactus Bowl

KINGSVILLE, Texas - Shepherd College's James Rooths and Dalevon Smith have been selected to play for the East for the 2001 Cactus Bowl, a NCAA Division II all-star game to be placed on Jan. 12 at Texas A&M-Kingsville.

Rooths, a defensive back/kick return specialist, has been selected to two All-American first teams following a senior season with nine interceptions. He ended his career with an NCAA all-division record 10 punt returns for touchdowns, including two in his final game.

Smith, a tailback, finished the season as the leading rusher in Division II at 166.1 yards per game. He finished with 1,495 yards for the season and set a school record with 267 yards in one game and tied marks with four touchdowns in a game and touchdowns in a season.
