JB girls make statement

By DAN KAUFFMAN / Staff Writer

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - James Buchanan's Lori Stauder knows only a Mid Penn Conference championship will make this season a success for her and her Rockets teammates. She also knew her team had to set the tone not only in its first conference game - on the road at Waynesboro - but for the entire season.

"We needed to beat them on their court," Stauder said. "We're going for the league championship, and we needed to make a statement."

So Stauder made a statement of her own, scoring six of her 12 points in a critical 13-1 run in the second quarter that lifted JB to a 45-31 victory Tuesday night.

"She is just more and more confident," Rockets coach John Lumm said. She's gonna get to the point where it will take two defenders to stop her. This year, Lori is the one that will have to get it done for us."

After Waynesboro (0-3, 0-1) took a 15-13 lead on Amy Simmers' hook shot to open the second quarter, Leah Price knocked down a 3-pointer that sparked JB (2-1, 1-0).

Then Stauder went to work inside, scoring on a putback, a jumper and a drive down the lane. She finished the run with an assist to Ellen Poe, giving the Rockets a 26-16 lead they would not relinquish.

"When we play Waynesboro, it's always a game of runs," Lumm said. "They never put a run together, and that was the run that won it for us."

Becky Porter hit three 3-pointers, two of them coming early in the third quarter, the final one giving JB a 37-24 lead and slamming the door on the Maidens. Waynesboro scored just nine points in the second half while JB consistently won the battle on the boards.

"Everybody contributed to this win," Lumm said. "That's important this early in the season."

"It's still early yet, we've been here before," Waynesboro coach John Lewkowicz said. "We've been here before, we just have to work on those little things."
