Frederick squeaks past Middletown

By ADELINE STAEBLER / Staff Correspondent

MIDDLETOWN, Md. - Brian Lewis had 22 points to lead Frederick over Middletown 67-63 Tuesday night in the season opener for both teams.

After battling back and forth for most of the game, Frederick took a 64-57 lead in the fourth quarter off a jumper by Curtis Crews. Darin Gordon had a free throw, Willie Brandenburg had two free throws and John Keimig had a free throw to pull the Knights within three.

Brian Lewis made a foul shot to give the Cadets a 65-61 lead, but then a jumper by Gordon brought Middletown back within two points. Middletown's Seamus Moore then fouled Cameron Stansbury and Stansbury converted both foul shots to give the Cadets their final score.

"I liked the pitch of the game, the game was going up and down although they were getting some shots, I liked the pace of the game with the way it was going," Frederick coach Derek Shackelford said.

"I just think they got a lot more rebounds than we did, they beat us on the boards," Middletown coach Jon Jarrett said. "We missed a lot of free throws down the stretch that could have closed the gap and we didn't get enough easy baskets. We needed to get the ball inside more and get more easy baskets."

The Knights were playing without senior forward D.J. Costello, who was out due to illness.

"We were expecting D.J., but since he didn't play, we had to focus on their guards," Lewis said. "It was a more shooting-type offense, where normally if (D.J.) had been in, they would have gone to the post more."

Justin Shade had 17 points and nine rebounds for the Cadets. Curtis Crews and Chris Crews each had seven rebounds. Stansbury had nine assists.

"I was more or less not expecting (anything from Middletown), I was expecting from my kids," Shackelford said. "I think, we're a young team overall, we're small, we have some good quickness, but I was looking more or less what our team could do, not so much what their team could do."

Jack O'Leary had 14 points and eight assists to lead the Knights. Brandenburg had 13 points, Gordon had 12 points and Bryan DeMoss had 11 points. Keimig had seven rebounds.
