Sharpsburg to give to children

SHARPSBURG - Sharpsburg Town Council members voted Monday night to spread some Christmas cheer to local children in need.

The town will donate $375, or $75 per child, to buy items for five children in need. The town will try to find the children and what they need through Sharpsburg Elementary School.

"When you have a 7-year-old asking for a coat and shoes for Christmas it's time to do something," Councilman Ralph Hammond said.

The council also voted 5-0 to give the Marine Corps' Toys for Tots program $300.

Councilwoman Denise Troxell recommended increasing the donation from last year's $200 contribution after learning the program helped several students at Sharpsburg Elementary School.

Troxell said she believed the value of toys given to the local children was greater than the town's $200 contribution last year.

Councilman Russ Weaver also suggested the town donate money to the Washington County Ag Expo after hearing the expo came up short of funds this year.

Councilman Hal Spielman, who helps organize the expo, said he would research what kind of funding or sponsorship the expo needs and get back to the council.
