Mail Call for 12/1

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call during the week. The Mail Call number is 301-791-6236.

You are welcome to leave a recorded message on any subject, but some calls will be screened out.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"I am a Korean War veteran and I am very upset at what is going on with the vote counting and the recounting in Florida. Al Gore keeps repeating that all votes should be counted. That is an absolute distortion of the truth. The votes in question have been counted at least twice. They were just not counted in his favor. It is clearly printed on the ballot that all the chads must be completely removed. If a few thousand people out of millions of people that voted lack the necessary skills to follow these simple instructions, then maybe they shouldn't vote at all. Your IQ should at least equal your shoe size to have that right. But what really made my blood boil was when the men and women serving in the military that voted for their commander in chief were denied because of questionable postmarks. FDR and JFK would have been appalled. Give it up, Al, we will get back in four years, but not with you as our choice."

"I am calling in reference to the pet deer that was shot near Downsville. There were a couple of things that were left out of the article. This deer was shot on Falling Waters Road, 50 feet from a tree stand. Buffy the deer made it 80 steps where he laid down to die. Buffy the deer was shot on Youth Day, 2000. How proud this youth must have been to shoot Buffy through the guts and left to die. With two fluorescent orange collars around his neck, what a proud youth hunter he must have been. My name is Bob and you can call if you want to clarify anything. My number is 301-223-6131."

"To the newly-elected School Board, let's clean out Commonwealth Avenue. Nobody is worth that kind of money. Plenty out there that would do the job fine."

"Do you live in an apartment and have problems with the landlord fixing things such as weak steps, plumbing or something else? You can invite the Hagerstown City Code Enforcement Officer into your apartment and then they can force them to. Their number is 301-790-3200 and ask for the Code Enforcement Officer."

"I was reading in Mail Call about the person that was watching CNN on Wednesday night and was wondering if anyone else had seen that the ballots in Florida were very clear. I agree 100 percent with them. I think what the problem is, Gore is a poor loser and doesn't want to give up."

"Why do the lawyers and governors wait until someone gets killed before they look at how the criminal justice system works, or should I say how it doesn't work, in the state of Maryland?"

"I was in an accident on I-81 south, around the Maugansville Exit on Tuesday, Nov. 21, at 4:10 p.m. My car was forced off the road by a tractor-trailer. I was wondering if anyone else saw the accident? Please call me at 301-717-597-1325 and ask for Carla or 301-733-3936 and ask for Jeff. I would also like to thank the two ladies that stopped to help me and my son. I don't know who you were, but you were definitely heaven sent."

"Concerning some comments about the no colored Christmas tree lights in Hagerstown. I urge you to come six miles to Williamsport Byron Memorial Park on Sunday, Dec. 3. We will be lighting the Christmas tree and the park decorations. This is a fabulous sight. Can your photographers come take a picture and put on the front page? We should be recognized for the way we make this town look every year."

"I want to thank the lady that was responsible for having the free senior citizens turkey dinner a few Saturdays ago at the Wilson Ruritan Club. I really enjoyed it and the food was really good. Thanks again."

"I want to give my sincere thanks to Tim, a clerk at the Fountainhead Martin's store. He is very kind, courteous and always very helpful. They are very fortunate to have such an employee."

"For Dec. 4, I would like to wish my daughter, my son and my grandson a happy birthday from mom Curry."

"I put a call in here about losing my car and house keys last Tuesday. I said to call Mail Call, my number is 301-733-1279. If I don't answer that is because I am in the hospital for five days, but please leave a message."

"I want to wish my beautiful wife, Kim, a happy birthday. I love you."

"Is there anyone in the South End of town that is interested in shoveling snow this winter in the area of Maryland Avenue? Call Mail Call and leave your first name and phone number and I will be in touch."

"I was wondering if anyone still had the old time metal ice cube trays? I am making a dessert and they are the perfect size. If anyone has any to get rid of, call me at 301-797-0065."

"I would like to thank the gentleman that helped me when I fell at Food Lion on Virginia Avenue, Friday evening Nov. 24. Would you please call me at 301-739-2362?"

"I want to say to my son, Edward, wishing you a happy birthday. Your memories will always linger here on Earth and your birthday will never be forgotten. Love always, mom, Donna and sister Theresa."
