Five charged with drugs in probe

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - A call to the Franklin County Drug Task Force's tipline Monday alerted detectives to drug activity at the Econo Lodge, 735 Buchanan Trail East in Antrim Township, and led to five Maryland men being charged this week with drug violations and the seizure by authorities of $3,000 worth of cocaine and marijuana.

A Franklin County drug task force investigator identified those charged as:

-- Travis Glenn Westurn, 21, 137 Blairs Valley Road, Clear Spring, charged with possession of drug paraphernalia. He was arraigned before Memminger and released on $5,000 unsecured bond.

-- Tedros Amarech, 31, 411 N. Locust St., Hagerstown, charged with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance, possession of a small amount of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and fugitive from justice. He was arraigned before Memminger and committed to the Franklin County Prison on $5,000 bond.

The task force obtained search warrants for rooms 112 and 210, which led to the arrest of three men, according to a task force detective who did not want to be named.

"We then stopped at Room 105 to check on that room and as we were talking to the (occupants) we saw drug paraphernalia - Baggies with corners torn off and knotted on the ends the way drug dealers package drugs," the detective alleged.

The seizure from all three rooms included a bag of crack cocaine about the size of a fist with a street value of about $3,000 and $3,000 cash.

"This was not out of the ordinary, but it was definitely a decent size seizure," the detective said.

Task force agencies assisting in the investigation included the Greencastle Police Department, the Washington Township Police Department, the Waynesboro Police Department K-9 Unit, the Franklin County District Attorney's Office and the Pennsylvania State Police.
