Fire marshal rules Nov. 15 Hagerstown apartment blaze arson

A two-alarm fire that injured seven people and damaged an eight-unit apartment building on West Franklin Street Nov. 15 was ruled arson by a Hagerstown fire marshal.

No arrests have been made in the fire, which started in the interior stairwell common area of 25 1/2 W. Franklin St., Fire Marshal Tom Brown said.

The West Franklin Street fire was one of 17 deliberately set structure fires in the city from Jan. 1 to Oct. 31, said Brown. Last year the city had 14 arsons of structures in the same period.

The recent arsons were particularly alarming because they were set in areas used as exits, Brown said. He said landlords and tenants must be vigilant about keeping entrances and exits clear.

On Aug. 29, a 14-unit apartment building at 424 N. Locust St. was the scene of a two-alarm fire that was determined to be arson. City fire marshals also found that recent fires on Saint Clair Street, Broadway and North Mulberry Street had been set.
