Park free downtown

There's free parking for the holidays in downtown Hagerstown.

Metered parking spaces in designated areas around downtown Hagerstown will be free beginning today and ending Christmas, City Finance Director Al Martin said Wednesday.

Free parking will be available at metered spaces in the city's Central Lot and on the first and second blocks of North Potomac Street, the first and second blocks of South Potomac Street, the first block of East Washington Street, the first block of West Washington Street, the first block of East Franklin Street, the first block of West Franklin Street, the first block of Summit Avenue, and the first block of Jonathan Street, Martin said.

Mayor Robert E. Bruchey II said the free parking serves as "an incentive to bring people downtown to do some holiday shopping.

"It's a gesture to the business people downtown that the city is behind their efforts 100 percent," Bruchey said.

Martin said the free parking will cost the city an estimated $12,000 in lost revenues.
