Two traffic mishaps occur at N. Burhans


One accident led to another early Tuesday on North Burhans Boulevard at Hillcrest Road, Hagerstown City Police said.

Isahia Allen Burker was driving a van northbound on Burhans Boulevard at 12:31 a.m. when he crossed the center line and hit a utility pole on the west side of the street, police said.

The pole broke and the wires fell across the roadway, police said.

Before police arrived, a southbound Ford Thunderbird hit the downed wires, causing minor damage to the vehicle, but the driver wasn't injured.

Burker, 18, of 21526 Leitersburg Road, was treated at Washington County Hospital and released.

Officer Jeffrey Pepple is continuing his investigation of the accidents.

Md. man charged with sexual assault


An Oakland, Md., man was charged Monday with sexually assaulting a 16-year-old boy last May at a party in the 17000 block of Virginia Avenue, Maryland State Police said.

Michael William Neikirk, 23, of 715 I Street, Apt. B, posted a $15,000 bond Tuesday and released from the Washington County Detention Center, a detention center official said.

Charges include second- and third-degree sex offense, perverted sex practice, second-degree assault and furnishing alcohol to minors, police said.

Trooper 1st Class Mike Potter charged Neikirk after an investigation of the May 27 party at which seven young men, all under the legal drinking age of 21, were given alcohol, police alleged.

The 16-year-old victim told Potter he was sexually assaulted in an upstairs bedroom after he became intoxicated at the party.

Interviews were conducted with several other partygoers who alleged to police that they witnessed the assault on the boy.

The alleged assault was reported the next day.

Neikirk was taken into custody without incident at a Washington County residence Monday and taken before a bond commissioner immediately.

Food taken from freezer in city


Food was taken from a freezer at 21 E. Lee St. late Monday or early Tuesday, Hagerstown City Police said.

No estimate of loss was available.

Woman charged with theft in Pa.


CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Charges have been filed against a Pennsylvania woman in connection with the theft of a diamond engagement ring, Chambersburg Police reported Tuesday.

Cyntha Smith, of 414 W. Loudon St., Apt. 104, in Chambersburg, was charged with theft and receiving stolen property, police said.

Linda Harland, 333 S. Main St., told police she initially though she lost the $500 ring Nov. 14.

Two charged in W.Va. during probe


MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Two West Virginia men were charged in connection with a drug probe Tuesday, West Virginia State Police said.

Carlton J. Lewis, 19, of 314 Garden Drive, Martinsburg, was charged with felony possession with the intent to deliver crack cocaine. Salem I. Banks, 29, also of Martinsburg, was charged with obstructing an officer, a misdemeanor.

A trooper found 16 grams of crack cocaine and cash at a home on Center Street in Martinsburg, police alleged.
