Child found dead in Frederick park

FREDERICK, Md. - The body of an elementary school-age boy was found in a Frederick County park Monday morning and police are investigating his death as a homicide, Capt. Harold Domer of Frederick City Police said.

Domer said a city Public Works employee found the body at around 9:30 a.m. Monday at McCurdy Field after police received an anonymous call about an altercation at a ballfield.

Domer would not describe the condition of the body.

Investigators spent Monday at the scene but would provide few details.

"What we have learned essentially is that it's a male body of a grade-school age child," said Lt. Thomas Chase.

Chase said the body will be sent to Baltimore for an autopsy today.

Police said Mary Voit of Carver Apartments in Frederick reported her son Christopher Lee Ausherman missing at around 9:30 p.m. Sunday. Her son is a fourth-grader at South Frederick Elementary School.

Voit has said she thinks the body found at the ballfield is that of her son, but investigators believe it's too soon to reach that conclusion, Chase said.

Voit did not return a message left on an answering machine believed to be hers.

Chase said the body found and Voit's son are similar in appearance.

Christopher Ausherman was described as being 3 feet, 6 inches tall and weighing 62 pounds, with green eyes, straight black hair and chipped front teeth, according to Chase.

He has scars on his face from a previous dog-bite incident, according to Chase.

When last seen Sunday, Christopher Ausherman was wearing a blue T-shirt with numbers on it, blue jeans and white sneakers.
