Election Board makes it easier to seek office

One-stop service is available to candidates filing for Hagerstown elected offices.

City Council and mayoral candidates can now complete all the necessary paperwork to run for office at the Washington County Board of Elections, the city announced Monday.

Candidates previously had to register the appointment of a campaign treasurer with the Board of Elections and file as a candidate at City Hall. The Board of Elections office is at 33 W. Washington St. in Hagerstown.

Hagerstown City Clerk Anna Pennesi said the goal is to make the filing process more convenient.

"We were looking for ways to streamline the process," said Pennesi, who has been city clerk since July 5.

Filing as a candidate for City Council costs $25. It costs $50 to file as a mayoral candidate.

The deadline for filing for the 2001 city election is Jan. 26.

The primary election is March 13. The general election is May 15.
