CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - A fire believed to have been set by vandals caused an estimated $100,000 in damage at the South Hamilton Community Association building in Chambersburg, said James Buhrman, president of the association.

Officials said vandals broke into the concession stand and storage areas of the building early Thursday morning, made off with food and soda and set the place on fire. The fire destroyed most of the building and the equipment of the association's 13 youth league baseball and softball teams.

The building at 892 Warm Springs Road is named after Robert "Bob" Carter, a Hamilton Township resident and major league baseball scout for the Kansas City Royals. Carter was born in Hagerstown and graduated from Chambersburg, Pa., High School in 1951. He died in 1997.

Pennsylvania State Police said the vandals gained entrance by throwing a cement block through a window.

Trooper Skip Skidmore, the state fire marshal for Franklin County, is investigating the fire.

Daniel Monn, assistant chief of the Franklin Fire Co. in Chambersburg, said investigators are looking at arson as the cause, but they didn't know how the fire was started.

Buhrman said it was started in one of the building's two storage rooms.

Among the items lost were more than 100 baseball bats, balls, catcher's gear and other equipment used by the league, including a brand new, still-in-the-box pitching machine, according to Monn.

"We lost everything," he said. "We had a kitchen here that could serve 300 dinners."

Monn said about 90 percent of the building was destroyed.

The league serves about 150 area youths. It raises its money through donations and fund-raisers, Buhrman said.

He said there may be enough insurance to cover the cost of replacing the building, but there was no insurance on the baseball and other equipment.

"You can't anticipate something like this," he said.
