Safety guidelines

The West Virginia Department of Natural Resources offers the following safety guidelines to help deer hunters begin a safe season Monday:

- Hunters must wear at least 400 square-inches of blaze orange material so they can be spotted by other hunters.

- Make sure you identify your target, and make sure the area behind the target is clear before shooting.

- If hunting on private property, obtain permission from the landowner.

- Familiarize yourself with West Virginia's hunting regulations, a copy of which can be picked up at most game checking stations and retail stores where hunting equipment is sold.

- If you suffer from heart complications, consider having someone assist you in dragging a deer out of the woods to prevent a heart attack.
