Youth accused in slaying returned to Maryland

FREDERICK, Md. - A 16-year-old youth accused in the May 4 shooting death of Cedric Brinkley was brought back to Maryland Wednesday from Las Vegas, Nev.

Melvin William Smith, street name "Rock," was served with grand jury indictments for first-degree murder and two handgun violations by Frederick City Police Detectives David Armstrong and Jeffrey Hutchison.

Apprehended in Las Vegas on Oct. 18, Smith was charged as an adult in the slaying of Brinkley, a 25-year-old Baltimore man found shot in Klineheart Alley on May 4.

Police believe the shooting of Brinkley and another murder earlier that night both stemmed from an altercation at a Frederick nightclub.
