HANCOCK - Hancock Mayor Daniel Murphy and his wife, Debbie, were honored in Annapolis Wednesday night for being Washington County's Most Wonderful Citizens of 2000.

They received recognition for their community work at the Maryland You Are Beautiful Awards.

After the ceremony, they were interviewed by Maryland Public Television and the interview ran later in the night as part of a news program.

"It was great. It was a wonderful thing," Dan Murphy said. "A very positive night. A room filled with people giving of themselves."

The Murphys were one of three married couples who were recognized during the awards ceremony, he said.

The ceremony was held the same night as Washington County's Celebration of Excellence banquet for students with grade point averages of 3.75 or better. The Murphys therefore could not watch their son, Allen, be recognized for his grades, Daniel Murphy said.

The Murphys were nominated by the school improvement team at Hancock Middle-High School for their work, including a successful push for construction of a new school gymnasium, Murphy said.

In addition to serving as mayor and working as a veterinarian, Murphy is on the Washington County Ethics Commission and was the school band boosters president.

Debbie Murphy serves on the Washington County Recreation and Parks Advisory Board and is chairman of the Christmas for Others charity event. She is a member of the Washington County Gaming Commission and immediate past president of the school's parent-teacher association.
