Pedestrian dies in West Virginia

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A Ranson, W.Va., man was killed when he was hit by a vehicle on W.Va. 9 Tuesday afternoon, according to the West Virginia State Police.

Anthony Eugene James, 38, of 50812th Ave. in Ranson died at about 2 p.m., said Sgt. T.C. Krisik.

"It appears that he (James) just stepped out in front of the vehicle" driven by Charles William Johnson, who was in his early 20s and is also from Ranson, Krisik said.

The accident occurred near the Opequon Bridge on W.Va. 9, he said.

"Johnson was cited for driving with a suspended license, but he has not been charged on the fatality," Krisik said.

Traffic was backed up in both directions as a result of the accident.
