Two Morgan County incumbents defeated

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Two Morgan County incumbents - County Commissioner Philip Maggio and County Assessor Gary Goller, lost their bids for re-election in Tuesday's balloting, according to unofficial final returns from the county's 13 precincts Wednesday.

Democrat Bob Ford beat Maggio, a Republican, by a vote of 2,674 to 2,559. Goller, also a Republican, lost his re-election bid to Democrat John Allen Swaim 2,709 to 2,515. Goller has held the job since the mid-1980s. Maggio is completing his first six-year term as a commissioner.

Ronald McIntire, a Republican, received 2,902 votes, enough to become Morgan County's new sheriff. He beat Democrat Mark Cowles, who had 1,068 votes.

Cowles came in behind write-in candidate Larry Bradley, a former West Virginia State Police trooper, who got 1,582 write-in votes.

Winners in the three-way magistrate race were incumbent Greg Miller with 3,360 votes and Ed Brown with 2,503. The loser was Debra Ditto with 2,068 votes.
