Teen dies of injuries after jump out of moving vehicle


SHANGHAI, W.Va. - A Martinsburg, W.Va., teen who apparently jumped out of a moving vehicle onto a rocky mountain road late Friday night has died of his injuries.

Andrew Clinton Steg, 18, was flown to Inova Fairfax (Va.) Hospital after his friends drove him several miles to the nearest house and called for help, police said.

Steg and two friends were drinking beer and driving around Sleepy Creek Mountain when the incident happened about 11:30 p.m., police said. However, the incident is still under investigation.

Driver Jason Butts, 20, of Hedgesville, was charged with driving under the influence and underage drinking. The 16-year-old was charged with underage drinking, police said.

Men charged with break-ins near new city YMCA site


Two 18-year-olds were apprehended early Sunday after several construction trailers were broken into at the site of the new Hagerstown YMCA off Eastern Boulevard.

Dustin Patrick Beaver and Ryan William Meihls were each charged with breaking and entering and theft in connection with the incident at the Callas Contractors trailers, according to Washington County Sheriff's deputies.

They were released from the Washington County Detention Center after posting $7,500 bond each.

Responding to reports that the trailers were being entered, deputies arrived around 3 a.m. and saw two people running away. The two were apprehended a short time later in a vehicle that allegedly contained items stolen from the trailers.

Vehicle break-ins reported by deputies


Early Sunday, reports of numerous break-ins of vehicles began to swamp Washington County Sheriff's deputies.

Neighborhoods reporting thefts included Comanche Drive, Seminole Drive, St. Mary's Court, Holiday Drive, Christy Avenue, Auburn Drive and Peacock Trail.

Motorist listed in critical condition after accident


FREDERICK, Md. - A motorcyclist who was hit by a passenger car trying to avoid a deer on northbound Interstate 270 was flown to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center this morning.

Just after midnight, Maryland State Police went to the area just south of Md. 85 where they found Michael Wayne Higgins, 43, of Frederick, injured and in the median.

Higgins' 1991 Harley Davidson motorcycle was struck by a 1997 Hyundai driven by Guy Djoken, 32, of Frederick, who lost control after hitting a deer and spinning his vehicle.

Traffic was tied up in both directions for about 20 minutes until the MSP medevac helicopter could land and take off again.

Higgins was in critical condition Monday evening, according to a spokesman at Shock Trauma.

No charges have been filed.

Equipment taken from Pa. construction company


GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Several pieces of equipment were stolen from the office of a Greencastle construction company last week.

Two gas compressors, two generators and a miter saw were taken from Stayco Construction between 7:30 p.m. Thursday and 6:45 a.m. Friday, police said.

The thieves used force to enter the business at 7514 Friendship Village Road, police said.

Man arrested for DUI after high-speed chase in Pa.


CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - A call to Pennsylvania State Police about a possibly suicidal man with a gun led to a high speed pursuit through Chambersburg that ended in an accident Saturday morning, police report.

Two troopers from the Chambersburg Barrack were responding to the call for a suicidal man with a gun at 5:30 a.m. Saturday, police said. On their way they saw a vehicle matching that of the man man's headed in the opposite direction, police said.

Police attempted to stop the car, but the driver accelerated and Pennsylvania State Police and Chambersburg Police followed in pursuit, according to police reports.

The chase began on Warmspring Road and continued through the borough and east on Pa. 30 at a high rate of speed, police said.

The pursuit ended on Pa. 30 at Pa. 233 when the fleeing man failed to negotiate a turn and struck a vehicle driven by Theodore Bricker of Fayetteville.

Police took the man into custody and found he was carrying a revolver and was intoxicated.

Police charged Troy Farner, 29, of Chambersburg with driving under the influence. He was in jail Monday night.

Bricker was not injured.

Chambersburg pedestrian listed in stable condition


CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - A pedestrian was injured Monday morning when she was hit in traffic on a busy Chambersburg road, police report.

Vivian E. Fisher was knocked to the ground by a passing vehicle in the area of 622 Lincoln Way East at 7:30 a.m., police said.

Fisher suffered head trauma and a hip injury and was taken to Chambersburg Hospital. She was listed in stable condition Monday night.

Police are investigating the accident.

Youth treated, released following truck accident


CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - A Chambersburg youth was treated and released at an area hospital after he jumped into the path of a truck Friday morning, Chambersburg Police report.
