HCC bounced in region

CATONSVILLE, Md. - The Hagerstown Community College Hawks were suffering from bad passing during the first day of the Region XX Volleyball Tournament at Catonsville Community College.

As a result, an opportunity to appear in the championship match literally passed them by on Saturday.

The Hawks were swept twice by the College of Southern Maryland, keeping them out of the region final for just the second time in 12 years.

Southern Maryland beat HCC 15-3, 15-11 in the Hawks' first match of the day.

They bounced back to beat Cecil 15-8, 15-13 before being eliminated by Southern Maryland, 15-7, 15-6.

HCC finished third in the six-team, double-elimination tournament. The Hawks end the season 35-9.

"This is only the second time since 1988 that we haven't been in the championship match," HCC coach Marlys Palmer said. "We had a bad day. The biggest thing was that our passing broke down pretty bad. It is hard to get anything else done when you are not passing well."

The problems kept multiplying for HCC because of the passing errors.

"We had 35 passing errors," Palmer added. "Sometimes, you can only hide your weaknesses for so long, until they jump out and grab you. Our passing was our single most glaring weakness of all this year. We had a pretty good hitting attack this year. But you can't hit, if you can't pass."

Kelli Martin contributed 58 assists and 10 digs, while Rachel Bachtell added 26 digs and 21 kills for HCC. Erica McCann had 13 kills, while Casey Nogle collected 22 digs, 19 service points and 11 kills for HCC. Jennifer Mentzer had 13 service points and 11 digs for HCC.

Southern Maryland will face Catonsville Community College in the Region XX final today.
