Roundup - Eagles make state tourney


FAIRMONT, W.Va. - The Hedgesville Eagles advanced to the West Virginia state volleyball tournament by sweeping North Marion and Hampshire in the Region II tournament Saturday at Fairmont Senior.

The Eagles beat North Marion 15-9, 15-6, 15-10 in the semifinals, then beat Hampshire 15-3, 15-3, 15-12 in the final.

The state tournament will be held Friday and Saturday at East Fairmont.


Williamsport 3, S. Garrett 1

OAKLAND, Md. - The Wildcats scored twice in a two-minute span in the first half to take the lead, then got an insurance goal six minutes into the second half to snap Southern's 11-game winning streak and take a spot in the Class 1A West final.

Brooke Weimer scored twice, and Holli Bowers sandwiched the game-winning goal in between them for Williamsport (No. 5 Herald-Mail, 11-4-1), which was seeded fourth in the West. Kaci Resau had two assists and Lindsay Dellinger had seven saves. Williamsport plays Beall at 5 p.m. Tuesday at home for the region title.


Glenelg 5, Boonsboro 2

BOONSBORO - Glenelg scored three times in the second half to bust a halftime tie and eliminate the Warriors in the Class 1A South semifinals.

"We played 'em tough. It was pretty much anybody's match," Boonsboro coach Jeff Palm said. "They played tough, even though the score didn't reflect it."

Brandon Hartle scored both goals for Boonsboro (7-8-1), the first on a header just 90 seconds into the game. Hartle later scored on another header off a free kick by Austin Gray. Boonsboro keeper Brian Eury injured a leg in the game and was taken to the hospital.


St. James 19, Model 3

ST. JAMES - Sid Huguenin and Brandon Monroe combined for nearly 400 yards of offense to lead St. James to a win over Model School and clinch the Saints' first winning season in five years.

Huguenin had four receptions for 123 yards and a touchdown and four carries for 66 yards. Monroe rushed for 206 yards and a touchdown.

The Saints finish the season at 5-3, their best since going 9-0 in 1995.

Blair Academy 43, Mercersburg Academy 19

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Kyle Fields was 21 of 28 for 270 yards and two touchdowns - both to Tugger Zema - but Mercersburg dropped its fourth straight game.

Zema had six catches for 117 yards and Ryan Fay had 27 tackles for the Blue Storm (5-4).


Salisbury back in NCAAs

SALISBURY, Md. - Senior captain Rusty Tristch from Williamsport High scored twice, and fellow Wildcat Matt Bowman scored at the final whistle as the Sea Gulls (17-2) beat Mary Washington 4-2 for the Capital Area Conference Tournament title and a spot in the NCAA Division III Tournament next week.
