Washington County to dominate 1A West

The Class 1A West region will have a definite Washington County flavor next year.

The Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association has proposed its classifications and regional alignments for the 2001-2003 school years, and six of the seven county schools - Boonsboro, South Hagerstown, Williamsport, Smithsburg, Clear Spring and Hancock - will be placed in the 1A West.

North Hagerstown will also be making a move, but a move backwards. The Hubs will drop back to Class 2A after spending the last two years as a 3A school.

North will be placed in Class 2A West, along with Francis Scott Key, Middletown and Walkersville in the Monocacy Valley Athletic League.

Frederick remains in Class 4A, but will move from the West to the East region. Thomas Johnson will also be placed in 4A East, moving up from Class 3A West.

The MPSSAA Board of Control will meet on Dec. 9 to approve the proposed classifications.
