Leopards back to old tricks

By JACK HILL III / Staff Correspondent

CUMBERLAND, Md. - Laura Stouffer and the Smithsburg girls cross country team have had a busy week racking up the titles.

On Saturday, Stouffer won the individual title at the Washington County championships, leading her Leopards to the team title.

Thursday, she - and her teammates - pulled the same trick in the Class 1A West Region meet at Allegany College.

Stouffer won the individual championship with a time of 20 minutes, 10.5 seconds, to lead her team's 40-point effort that won the team competition.

"It makes me really happy to win all of these titles," Stouffer said. "I was very nervous, because I was wondering if I was going to win two titles in a row. All of our runners did really well. Everybody did the best that they could. We are all really happy with our performance. Everybody has been practicing real hard. We have been motivating each other to help all of us do better."

Williamsport finished second in the girls race with 60 points, followed by Southern Garrett (62) and Boonsboro (81), which was led by runner-up Anita Rhoderick, who led late before finishing in 20:13.

"I usually stay behind the number one runner," Stouffer said. "I just keep my eye behind the runner and I keep a pretty good distance. With about a half mile left, I passed Anita. After that, I just sprinted my hardest and I went all the way to keep my lead."

Westmar also repeated as the boys' team champion with a score of 42. Westmar was followed by Williamsport (90), Clear Spring (95), Boonsboro (95) and Beall (111).

The top 15 individual runners in both races qualified for the Maryland State Championships on Saturday, November 11 at Hereford High School. The top four girls teams and the top five boys teams will also qualified.
