Jaws of defeat not daunting to Lions

WILLIAMSPORT - Facing a 21-7 halftime deficit to Williamsport and losing the battles up front on both sides of the ball, Walkersville coach Hal Grau looked at his passing stats - 0-for-4 with an interception - and made a quick decision.

"We got two extra linemen in there and said if we're gonna win the game, we're gonna win it in the trenches," Grau said.

On their first three possessions of the second half, the Lions ran the Wildcats out of their own stadium, scoring on touchdown drives of 65, 77 and 63 yards without attempting a single pass in a 27-21 victory in the Monocacy Valley Athletic League on Thursday.

"In the first half, they controlled the line of scrimmage," Grau said. "In the second half, we controlled the line, and that was the difference."

While the Lions (3-6, 3-5) stayed grounded in the second half, Williamsport (3-6, 3-5) controlled the first half by taking to the air.

On his first pass attempt, Adam McAllister found Kyle Wilson on a crossing pattern, and Wilson turned it up the right sideline for a 75-yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead.

After Cory Hoffman tied the score on a 1-yard plunge for the Lions, McAllister found Wilson open on the same crossing pattern, and Wilson went 62 yards untouched into the end zone with 55 seconds left in the quarter. Danny Rand's 6-yard run in the second quarter put the Wildcats up, 21-7.

Walkersville fumbled on its second play of the second half, but the ball bounced past several Williamsport defenders and the Lions recovered.

"When they fumbled the ball forward 8 yards and it went through our guy's feet, I thought that could have been a backbreaker," Michael said.

It was - for the Wildcats. Hoffman ended the first two drives of the second half with touchdown runs and Pat Calloway completed the comeback with a 2-yard run to end the third drive.
