Roundup - Top-seeded North hangs on


GERMANTOWN, Md. - Tim Salvagno's goal busted a 1-1 tie for North Hagerstown, as the top-rated Hubs beat Seneca Valley 2-1 Wednesday night in the quarterfinals of the Maryland Class 3A West playoffs.

Mike Brooks earlier scored for North (15-1, No. 2 Herald-Mail poll) from Dustin Showalter to get the Hubs on the board. Keeper David Chaney recorded five saves.

North moves into the semifinals and will play Liberty, the region's fourth seed, this weekend at home.


Glenelg 5, South 0

GLENELG, Md. - The two-time defending state champion Gladiators eliminated the Rebels in the Class 1A South quarterfinals. Goalie Ashley Mullican had 12 saves for South (4-11) in a losing effort.


North 3, Middletown 0

MIDDLETOWN, Md. - No. 9 North swept its way to a season-ending win over the Knights, 15-8, 1-4, 15-10. Michelle Levins had five kills and two aces for North (10-4, 5-3 MVAL). Katie Stamper and Casey Breslin each had six kills. Nicole Morgan had five kills and 22 assists.


Amanda Kaufman had seven assists and five saves for Middletown (5-9). Mandy Harshman had six assists and three kills. JV: North, 15-9, 15-6.

Clear Spring 3, Hancock 1

CLEAR SPRING - Tara Myers had 17 service points, eight aces and 10 assists, to lead Clear Spring (3-11) to a season sweep of the Panthers with a 10-15, 15-13, 15-0, 15-12 win.

Amie Eichelberger 11 assists and Megan Springer had 16 kills for the Blazers (3-11). Hancock finishes the regular season at 6-8. JV: Clear Spring, 15-10, 15-7.


Boonsboro 14, South 8

BOONSBORO - Jason Warfield had a 1-yard touchdown run for Boonsboro (4-3) and Brett Morrell added a 51-yard TD run.


South 39, Boonsboro 34

BOONSBORO - Anton Jones rushed for over 200 yards and scored three touchdowns, David Minor threw two touchdown passes and rushed for another while Evan MacKenzie and Todd Glines each scored for South (4-4-1).

Middletown 40, Walkersville 26

MIDDLETOWN, Md. - Tyler Lushbaugh and John Keimig each had two touchdowns for Middletown. Keimig also had 127 yards receiving and Sean Beachley had one touchdown and 113 yards rushing for Middletown (7-1).


Gerhold fires ace

Tom Gerhold shot a hole-in-one on the 14th hole Sunday at Beaver Creek Country Club.

Gerhold used a 7-iron on the 147-yard hole. The shot was witnessed by Jeff Foster, Carl Spessard and Wayne Wishard.

FSU third in league

ALTOONA, Pa. - The Frostburg State University women's tennis team placed third, in a tie, out of five teams in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championship Saturday. Frostburg junior Becky Allnutt, of Frederick, Md., took second place in No. 2 singles.

Paine honored in PSAC

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Sophomore Sarah Paine of Chambersburg High School, a member of the Shippensburg field hockey team, was named to the PSAC second team.
