Beaver Creek Country Club professional Dirk Schultz completed a successful 2000 Wednesday by winning Player of the Year honors in the Mid-Atlantic Professional Golf Association (PGA) Section.

With the award comes an automatic exemption to the 2001 Kemper Open, played annually at the Tournament Players Course at Avenel.

The 35-year-old Schultz clinched the Player of the Year honors by finishing third in the Tournament of Champions held this week at the Evergreen Country Club in Haymarket, Va.

With the tournament finish, Schultz accumulated enough points in the six-tournament competition to defeat Wayne DeFrancesco.

"I played a lot of tournaments this year and had some success, but being named Player of the Year in the Section has to be the highlight," the son of Mr. and Mrs, Ruichard Schultz said. "I beat some good pros."

Schultz claimed three Section champions in 2000: the Stablefield, the Chapter and the Match Play.

He also finished second in the Maryland Open and the Hillendale and third in the Tournament of Champions.

Last week, Schultz finished second in the first stage of the Professional Golf Association Tour qualifying school held at the Kannapolis (N.C.) Country Club. He advances to the second stage set for Nov. 14-17 at Bear Lakes Country Club in West Palm Beach, Fla.
