Roundup - Hubs push through twice in 3A West


ROCKVILLE, Md. - Lindsay Zerance finished fifth in the individual race, and the North Hagerstown girls finished third in a field of 11 Thursday at the Class 3A West regional to advance to the state meet next weekend.

The Hubs also got top finished from Stephanie Kurtz (12th), Jessica Hanlin (18th), McKenzie Fox (26th) and Bethany Shoaf to qualify for the state meet at Hereford High School.

North's boys finished sixth out of 13 to also move on. Erik Lenhart's sixth-place finish led the way. Also scoring for North were Tom Harding (14th), Tyler Snyder (31st), Steve Heagy (49th) and Seth Hartley (57th).

Knights cruise in 2A West

MIDDLETOWN, Md. - Middletown swept the 2A West regional on its home course and earned two spots in the state meet. Middletown's girls finished with 26 points as the boys finished with 34 points as a team.


Randy Buzzell won the girls race in a time of 18:21 and was followed by teammates Rocky Morgan, second, and Catherine Rohland, third. Andrea Pope (ninth) and Maria Rohland (11th) finished Middletown's scoring. came in eleventh. Abigail Bowers came in 36th to lead Walkersville, which finished seventh with 182 points.

For the boys, the Knights' Matt Harrell came in second as Mark Samuel followed in fifth. Justin Myers finished sixth, Brandon Keller finished ninth for the Knights and Justin Coconis was 12th for Middletown. Walkersville's boys came in 10th with 290 points.


Chambersburg makes semis

YORK, Pa. - Chambersburg continued its quest for a second straight trip to the Pennsylvania Class AAA state tournament with a 4-15, 15-11, 15-5 victory over Susquehannock in the District 3 quarterfinals, snapping the Warriors 51-match winning streak and knocking them from a shot at defending their state title.

Sarah Kriner had 17 kills and Steph VanBrakle had 29 assists and seven blocks - four for kills - to lead the Trojans (19-2, No.1 Herald-Mail poll), who move on to the district semifinals this weekend at Central York High School. VanBrakle also had a team-high 10 points and five aces, while Lori Wilkinson had eight kills for Chambersburg.

Hedgesville 3, Hampshire 1

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Hedgesville (28-4-4, No. 5 Herald-Mail poll) beat the Trojans for the third time this season to win the Region II Section 1 tournament, 15-12, 16-18, 15-11, 15-7.

Tracey Regalbuto had 20 service points and 28 assists to lead the Eagles, who took the section's No. 1 seed for this weekend's region tournament at Fairmont Senior. Ashley Copenhaver had 18 kills, Keri Jackson had 16 kills and Nancy Regalbuto had 14 kills for Hedgesville.
