Driver dies 3 days after crash

A Hagerstown-area man died Tuesday at Washington County Hospital, three days after he was injured in a traffic accident, according to Maryland State Police.

Richard Shane Oyler, 33, of 9455 Earley Drive, died Tuesday morning, Sgt. Kevin Lewis said.

Police said Oyler did not appear severely injured at the hospital following the Oct. 29 accident. He remained in the hospital from Sunday through Tuesday, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Oyler was northbound on Md. 65 north of Leslie Drive around 1 a.m. Sunday when the 2000 Ford Mustang he was driving began to skid, Lewis said.

The Mustang crossed the center line and the southbound lane before leaving the road, Lewis said. As the car spun around, the rear of the Mustang struck a tree, he said.

There were no passengers in the car, police said.

Oyler was conscious following the accident, according to Lewis. He was charged with negligent driving and driving while intoxicated, he said.

"As always we would warn people not to drink and drive. Wearing your seat belts can prevent serious injuries," Lewis said.
